Azerbaijan, the host nation for the upcoming COP29 Climate Change
Conference, has officially joined the Global Methane Pledge — a key international initiative aimed at reducing methane
emissions, one of the most potent greenhouse gases contributing to global warming.
The Global Methane Pledge represents a voluntary commitment by participating nations to cut methane emissions by at
least 30% by 2030, relative to 2020 levels. By signing this agreement, Azerbaijan reaffirms its growing leadership in
the global fight against climate change.
“Azerbaijan’s signing of the Global Methane Pledge sends a strong signal as it prepares to host this year’s COP29
climate talks and further strengthens its reputation as a reliable green-energy partner to the world,”
— Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources and COP29 President-Designate.

Azerbaijan’s environmental commitment is not new. The country ratified the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC) in 1995 and the Kyoto Protocol in 2000, taking early steps to align with global climate goals. Joining the
Global Methane Pledge represents a natural progression in its ongoing transition toward sustainability and climate
responsibility.
As the nation prepares to host COP29, this move underscores Azerbaijan’s determination to play a central role in
shaping the global dialogue on climate action, energy efficiency, and methane reduction, reinforcing its position as a
trusted and forward-looking partner in the energy transition.
