During the opening ceremony of the XI Global Baku Forum, held under the theme “Restoration of the Broken World,” President Ilham Aliyev announced Azerbaijan’s ambitious plan to achieve 5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy generation capacity by 2030.

Highlighting recent progress, President Aliyev noted that in October 2023, Azerbaijan inaugurated the largest solar power plant in the Caucasus and Central Asia, with a capacity of 230 MW. He also emphasized that preparation and construction work is currently underway for two additional solar plants, further expanding the country’s clean energy portfolio.

According to the President’s remarks, this goal is “entirely realistic”, as Azerbaijan has already signed numerous agreements and memorandums of understanding with international partners to support renewable energy development. These collaborations aim to attract investment, enhance energy diversification, and accelerate the nation’s transition to a sustainable energy economy.

President Aliyev also announced that Azerbaijan is “actively engaged in constructing a green energy electric cable” connecting the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea and Europe. The technical justification for this large-scale project is nearly complete — marking a major step toward establishing Azerbaijan as a regional hub for green energy exports.

This strategic vision underscores Azerbaijan’s growing commitment to energy transition, sustainability, and international cooperation, setting a clear path toward a greener and more resilient future.
